McMoneybags Wins; To Deliver GOP Response to Kaine’s Final Address Tomorrow
Adding insult to injury, Jeff McMoneybags, fresh from buying up the 8th Senate seat, will deliver the Senate Republican response to Kaine’s final address before the General Assembly tomorrow night. WTF?! Get over how disrespectful this is to our outgoing Governor, and try to imagine just exactly what McMoneybags is capable of saying, especially considering that Kaine’s speech will likely be reflective. No doubt the entire thing will be written for him, so hopefully McMoneybags’ arrogance and conceit will be kept in check.

Thanks to Dave Marsden’s victory in the 37th District, Bob McDonnell gets the loss of another State Senate seat as an inauguration present!
What this means for Virginians is that Democrats have the votes to stop McDonnell’s plans to put tolls back on Virginia’s roads and to stop his plan to sell the operating rights to the Port of Virginia to his off-shore corporate backers.
Virginians should all be dancing in the streets. McDonnell will be stopped cold. He won’t be able to sell Virginia’s assets with the Democrats holding a two vote margin in the Senate.
As for Bill Fleming, he should be the Grand Marshall of the Neptune Festival parade. For the first time in decades, Virginia Beach voters had a clear choice and they had the option to vote for a Democratic candidate for their State Senator. In just two weeks, Dr. Fleming was able to mobilize over two thousand voters to vote for him. His Republican opponent, Mr. McWaters, who is a retired health insurance gatekeeper, had to spend nearly a million dollars to muster 8,051 votes, the LOWEST
turn-out for a Republican in the Eighth District in over thirty years!
With just two weeks to work with, Bill Fleming has re-energized Virginia Beach Democrats and has sparked the interest of the all important, crossover voters. Given a full fledged campaign next time around, the Republicans will soon learn that the Eighth District is no longer a “safe” seat.
All Virginians should thank Dr. Bill Fleming for carrying the Democratic banner in this special election and for him providing the citizens of Virginia Beach a choice; a choice of continued hope and change for moving Virginia back onto the road to prosperity.
Thanks, Bill, for your gallant effort. I hope you will try again, next time.

So does anyone else get the feeling that McWaters is planning a run for Governor in, say, eight years? He can’t possibly be spending this ridiculous sum of money just to be a junior state Senator in the minority.

A critique of the campaign. I tried for the most part to stay out of this election because, while I do live in Va Beach, I do not live in the district. But now that the election is over…
I visited Bill’s website. While he had some interesting ideas and positions on issues what struck me was that many of these ideas came with a high price tag. For example: education. While I am in favor of increased salaries for teachers (disclosure: one of my kids is in college to become a teacher) and I am willing to at least give pre-K education for all a try, I am wondering where we are going to find the money. During the current budgetary problems due to the economy, we might end up seeing decreases in education spending; I do not think it is prudent at this juncture to be making proposals that require additional spending.
I also wish to point out that Bill allowed himself to be goaded into name calling during a comment he posted in response to one of Brian Kirwin’s articles on Bearing Drift. While 95% of his rather lengthy comment was an appropriate defense of his positions, at one point he launches into an explanation for why Brian Kirwin would disagree with him on one issue might be that Brian is an anti-Semite. I think it would only be a slight exaggeration to state this was comparable to George Allen’s macaca moment.

It’s Macaque, but that is beside the point. Allen lost to Webb because Mr. Allen had backed Bush turning our federal security agencies against Americans. A significant number of Virginia voters have a strong libertarian streak and deeply resented that government agencies under Bush were spying on Americans, arresting Americans without charges, then imprisoning some of them and torturing or rendering others to foreign governments.
That is why Allen was defeated. The citizens hoped that Mr. Webb would be a better advocate for our citizens; so far he has shown that he is an exemplary Senator.
Bill Fleming is trained as a Physicist and is new to the “art” of politics, so he deserves some lee-way when enduring a hostile interview from the Democratic-hating Mr. Kirwin or any of his anti-Semitic associates.
