Andrew Jackson for VB City Council

One of my favorite Virginia Beach Democrats is throwing his hat in the ring for City Council.

Tomorrow (Feb. 2, 12:30pm), the Mayor will “call to order a Special Formal Session of the Virginia Beach City Council for the purpose of interviewing each of the sixteen candidates who have applied for the vacant At Large seat, previously served by Councilman Villanueva”. Each of the 16 will get “five [5] minutes to present intent, enhance qualifications, or whatever you deemed important to share with the Members of City Council at that time; and, then you will have ten [10] minutes to respond to questions of the Members of City Council”.

Andrew will be heard at around 1:45pm.

After the interviews, “City Council may go into Closed Session to discuss their findings and possibly come to a consensus for the possible appointment. City Council will reconvene the Formal Session to certify the Closed Session and may make the appointment, after which they will adjourn. If the appointment is not made Feb 2nd, it could be a part of the Agenda on Feb 9th.”

Go Andrew!

  1. William Bailey Says:

The voting citizens rejected him so why should city council select him? I can’t see it happening.

  2. David Campbell Says:

How many citizens voted for Jackson? How many citizens voted for any of the other 15 candidates?

  3. Eileen Levandoski Says:

So all former city council candidates need not apply? Losing once disqualifies them forever? How un-American, WB.

  4. William Bailey Says:

David: Citizen Council race votes in Nov 2008: Jackson: 38,762 McClannan: 69,974 BTW: I support McClannan. But Sessoms & Davis are not likely to let her have another chance.

Eleen: I didn’t disqualify anyone, I asked: “What are his qualifications?” I don’t get a vote on who sits in Ron’s chair…

  5. Henry Ryto Says:

    William,

Apples and oranges comparing McClanan’s numbers in a two-way to Jackson’s in a three-way. While you were at it, you could have pointed out both Howie Carr and Sam Reid lost in 2006.

However, anyone who knows what the anti-McClanan coalition in 2008 was about knows Reba doesn’t have a chance of getting the appointment.

    Eileen,

Given that I wrote issues papers for Andrew’s 2008 campaign, I’d be elated to see him get the appointment. However, I’d put him in the second tier of possibilities.

  6. Eileen Levandoski Says:

Where is the list of the 16 candidates for this appointment, Henry? Just curious…

  7. William Bailey Says:

Henry: The topic is Jackson. I didn’t think hijacking the discussion from everyone was proper. Your second tier is still a “nonplayer” in the city council selection process. And I pointed out that Reba doesn’t have a chance with Davis and Sessoms on the council. They will likely pick a republican who will support higher taxes, more spending on big dollar projects and somebody who will not make waves.

Hate to say it but they don’t really care if the candidates are good or not. Its about politics… Jackson still has no chance and I haven’t heard about his quals to date…

  8. William Bailey Says:

    The candidates

Rita Sweet Bellitto, School Board member

    Vivian Blaize, Advertising company owner
    Howard Carr, retired police captain
    Chris Hooper, dentist
    Andrew Jackson, retired Navy radioman
Ben Krause, retired U.S. Navy Supply Corps officer
    Reba McClanan, former City Councilwoman
    Antwan Perry, college adviser
    David Redmond, leasing agent
Sam Reid, retired Navy sonar technician
    Ralph Ricardo, retired Navy captain
    Prescott Sherrod, engineering company owner
Todd Solomon, nonprofit center program director
Robert Thornton, vice president of real estate company
    David Tisza, lumber company manager
Alfred Wallace III, defense contractor analyst

  9. Eileen Levandoski Says:

I heard Ben Krause dropped out.

  10. Henry Ryto Says:

    Eileen,

Yes, Ben is gone. As a VBTAer, he didn’t have a snowball’s chance. In addition, he’s made repeated public rumblings about wanting to move out of the area, which makes his commitment to Virginia Beach look weak at best.

  11. William Bailey Says:

And the winner is: Rita Sweet Bellitto, School Board member

    I rest my case..

  12. Henry Ryto Says:

The Rita Sweet Belitto appointment makes zero political sense. FYI, I had thought Prescott Sherrod and Dave Redmond were the frontrunners.

Worst part: we now have to have another School Board appointment.

  13. Brian Kirwin Says:

It makes plenty of sense, if you knew the facts.

  14. Henry Ryto Says:

Oh, that’s right: any disagreement with Brian Kirwin is based in ignorance.

Kirwin’s arrogance is so appalling that no wonder Rosemary Wilson is the only person who can start to stomach his antics.

  15. Brian Kirwin Says:

Henry, attack me all you want. I’ll never go to sleep at night wishing I was you.

If you knew what Council knew, you’d make the same choice.

Very good post. I’ve found your blog via Bing and I’m really happy about the information you provide in your articles. Btw your blogs layout is really messed up on the Chrome browser. Would be great if you could fix that. Anyhow keep up the good work!
