Glenn Nye’s Seat: From Leans Dem to Toss Up
Writes CQ Politics, “As Nye and his party shift to playing defense in a historically challenging midterm election year, CQ is shifting the rating of the 2nd district race to ‘Tossup’ from ‘Leans Democratic.’”
“[H]is party”?????
Oh, that’s right… I remember now. Nye’s a Democrat, for now. That is until Rep. Eric Cantor gets to him.
CQ says they are making the rating change as heir-apparent Scott Rigell with his personal fortune as a car salesman has muscled his way to the top of the crowded pool of Republican nominees.
“And it will be difficult for Republicans to portray him as a lockstep adherent of Democratic leaders because his voting record is among the least liberal in the House Democratic Caucus. Nye voted for the economic stimulus law but bucked his party on the cap-and-trade climate change bill and a Democratic-written health care bill President Obama recently signed into law”, writes CQ.
Ah… silly CQ has forgotten that Republicans lie. Nye will be painted as a liberal Pelosi Democrat no matter what. That is unless Cantor intervenes, shifts course away from Nye, leaving Rigell dangling on his own.
And wouldn’t it be the ultimate kick in the crotch if Glenn somehow manages to gain back Democratic grassroots support, pulls off a win, and then says “fuck it” and jumps parties.
Things would have been so different for Glenn Nye if he had only bothered to listen to the folks that got him elected in 2008. Oh well…. there’s always Tom Perriello’s race to get excited about!

One cost of having no grassroots support? Nye’s having a difficult time getting petition signatures. Ouch.

Maybe his GOP buddies will help him this time around… He’s not getting any help from me and my friends this time. The amazing part is he still has a chance to get re-elected.

Nye would have no chance at all if he voted for the healthcare package. McDonnell won in a landslide in Va beach and most of the liberal delegates were swept out in 2009. They may have been hard working, but they were attacked as liberals especially Bouchard. I think the race is actually Dem leaning with Golden as an I to funnel votes away from Rigell and hand Nye the race with under 50% of the vote. If dems continue to push through an idealogical test for candidates they will lose elections. I think Nye will win this race, but I do not beleive Perriello can win. He will not have the votes he needs from the UVA college kids without Obama on the ballot. Its more wise to focus on someone with a better chance of winning to keep a Dem majority.

The dog says:
In a red district such as VA-02, it’s all about Indys for a Democrat to win. Glenn Nye has pissed off the base, and true, this will hurt as he will not get the $$ and the volunteer effort he did in 2008. However, in the end, we will go to the polls, hold our nose, and vote for him. Despite his votes against cap and trade and HCR, Republicans will go to the polls and vote Scott Rigell (even my brother-in-law, who, 2 years ago, ranted about the lemon he was sold from Freedom Ford).
So who will the Indys vote for this time? There’s no ineffective Thelma Drake on the ballot. No Obama on the ballot. No protest vote against the Bush administration’s utter failure. I can’t see how Nye wins.
I think Perriello has a better shot. The base will be there for him, and there’s a lot of $$ and effort coming his way – ActBlue, DailyKos, just to name a couple, have sent him some good $$, and Perriello has a good stash of cash on hand for the race. He has many of the same negatives as above, but I think Indys appreciate his character and he’s been much more available in the district.
Up in VA-01, will be interesting to see if the teabagger Crabill gives Wittman a good run for his money – I think she will in Matthews and Gloucester County. Might give an opening to the Democratic candidate Krystal Ball (I know, the porn star sounding name is unfortunate), who appears to be a very earnest and well balanced candidate.

Scott Rigell is not embraced by many conservatives. His support of HB 3202, the 2007 unconstitutional regional taxing authority bill, reveals another shill for the same corrupt business lobby cabal that seeks to buy off our local political process. The old “YES Campaign” tax & spend and borrow & spend agenda that is ruining the economic health of our local governments as they struggle with too much annual “debt serving”. Debt incured to fund big ticket Corporate welfare projects. If Mr. Rigell wins the GOP brand then the enthusiasm from the TEA Party “Indys” that another choice like Ben Loyola would bring will not materalize for the GOP on the Southside in the 2nd District. As was pointed out, Congressman Nye was not hard Left, so he hasn’t really upset the non-Left voters in the 2nd. There isn’t any real stong objection to his voting record. Should Mr. Rigell be the GOP pick he may not tap into the strong passion that the TEA Party “Indys” could bring to help back the GOP candidate.
Speaking for myself, I’d actually work to help Ben Loyola win in the 2nd. I’m a TEA Party “Indy”. Mr. Freedom Ford/Yes Campaigner? I can’t even vote for him. I’m certainly not going out of my way to help the GOP annoint another shill for the local business cabal that doesn’t actively support the concept of limited government, personal property rights, reducing government spending, and who supports dumb business lobby government spending on things like light rail/TOD, taxpayer subsidized slow speed rail, and “Public Private Partnerships” that benefit the business “partner” and the politicians that go along with the scam, and stick it to the taxpayers.
