Scott “Suck Up” Seery’s True Colors

Meet the true Scott “Suck Up” Seery, candidate for the at-large School Board seat this Nov. 2nd. At our VBDC breakfast last Saturday, Paul Baker asked which of the 2nd district congressional candidates he was supporting. Suck Up Seery declined to answer, saying that it was inappropriate to weigh in as he has is own race to run. Well, if his $100 contribution to the Repug Party of Virginia Beach doesn’t give you some indication of his leaning, check out his Facebook posts! Holy cow! Can you say “winger”?!?

Suck Up Seery was appointed to his current school board seat. This will be the first time he faces the voters of Virginia Beach. In typical GOPper style, Suck Up Seery is the new chosen son, who will use his School Board appointment as a stepping stone to higher office. How else would one explain all the sucking up?!?

Let’s squash that idea right away. The last thing our kids need right now is another vapid right-wing kiss-up like Carolyn Weems (go Dr. Carray Banks!) Let’s work hard to get Dottie Holtz elected. She’s the real deal!

StumbleUpon It!

Its a good thing the Virginia Beach School Board is a “nonpartisan” election.

What I want to know is which candidate supports the SOL (Standards Of Learning) tests?

What, only the students should be tested but not the teachers? Testing kids is great but testing adults is off limits?

    LD,

In his first House of Delegates session, Jeff Frederick had a bill that would have required teachers, as a condition of employment, to pass the SOL test that they were teaching to. It was left to die in committee.

I would have loved to have seen how many teachers would have flunked it. :)

Frederick’s bill was a political stunt. (By the way, Frederick was ousted as GOP chairman in 2009 following allegations that he directed business to his own company, spent party money for unbudgeted purposes without approval, and made embarrassing political gaffes — including comparing Obama to Osama bin Laden.)

Public school teachers teach the SOLs on a daily basis. I have no doubt that they would all successfully pass the same SOL tests that their students are passing.

Virginia Beach teachers have an average of about 15 years of experience and 50% have earned graduate degrees.

My kids have received excellent education in Virginia Beach public schools. Nearly all their teachers have been highly qualified and dedicated. Just last night, I attended a high school Open House: The Honors English teacher who will be teaching the literature of the UK and Ireland earned her Masters degree in Ireland. The Spanish VI teacher is a Spanish-American who spends his summers in Spain. The AP Psychology teacher’s students achieve a higher success rate on the AP test than the national average. The AP Government teacher is a recipient of the Outstanding History Teacher award from the the Daughters of the American Revolution. They are all passionate about the subjects they are teaching.

    David and Henry,

I didn’t quite mean it like that. I just meant that SOL results of students offer a measuring stick that can be used to evaluate teachers’ competence. Now I realize these results need to used carefully when evaluating a teacher, however some objective measure needs to be included.

It is also my opinion that generally teachers are not paid enough for the demands placed upon them. However if we are going to pay more I want to ensure the increased pay is earned. Most teachers are good but not each and every one. We need to separate the wheat from the chaff and then pay the wheat appropriately.

I understand there are reasonable complaints about this, (evaluating teachers by students’ SOL results) but I look at this as being the better of two evils. Prior to such a step, we had students receiving high school diplomas that had trouble reading the diploma. To this day I see cashiers at fast food counters who have trouble making change.
