Priorities

What are the biggest problems facing America? The economy? Unemployment? Climate change? The deficit? Immigration reform?

Republican Rep. Randy Forbes’ top legislative priority is to reaffirm “In God We Trust” as the national motto and have it posted in every school and public building.

Republican Rep. Scott Rigell’s top legislative priority is to extend all constitutional rights from the moment a human egg is fertilized by a sperm.

This is what Republican leadership looks like — sponsoring symbolic legislation that has zero chance of passing but panders to the extremists of their political base.

Meanwhile during his first few months in office, Glenn Nye insured veterans concerns were included in legislation. Some in the Democratic base were upset that their favorite item was not on the top of his list, but think about it. While many Democrats were available to lead towards adopting legislation they supported, Glenn Nye stood as a true leader in the Democratic party giving voice to concern for veterans when so often such a voice of leadership was lacking.

We can see where Scott Rigell is going to take us. I hope veterans will keep this in mind when two years from now they go to the ballot box. I hope the leadership of the local VFW and American Legion organizations will honestly compare Glenn Nye’s two years to Scott’s as well as the recent past history of Drake and Schrock. When veterans are better represented by the Democrat, shouldn’t the Democrat get the endorsement of the veterans’ organizations?

  2. David Campbell Says:

I agree that re-electing Nye would have been better than electing Rigell. In the last election, Nye was endorsed by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the National Federation of Independent Business, the National Rifle Association, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. I’m not sure whether or not Nye will be the best Democratic candidate to run in the next election.

  3. LittleDavid Says:

There were arguments made that Glenn did not deserve the veteran’s organizations’ endorsement. Scott Rigell did a good job of paying lip service to veterans.

After two years, let veterans compare real results to lip service. I am confident that Scott’s record will fall short of Glenn’s. Glenn didn’t just sponsor bills that went nowhere, what he proposed became law.

If Glenn failed in this district with all of those endorsements, just think of the chances of a Democrat without them. Would a Nancy Pelosi endorsement be a plus or a minus in this district?

  4. David Campbell Says:

It remains to be seen whether Rigell will be able to match Nye’s results (like you, I doubt it), whether Nye will even run again, and what other Democratic candidates may emerge.

I’d like to see dems pander to their base

  6. David Campbell Says:

Tiffany: While Republicans stage political stunts, Democrats have actually governed and successfully passed a long list of meaningful legislation.

    Tiffany,

If the Democratic base wants to achieve any of their objectives, they need to play ball with moderates. This does not mean you are going to get kids to play with you when you take the ball home with you.

If the Democratic base deserts voting for Democratic candidates because they are too moderate, then after you go home, we’ll be left coming to a majority decision without your involvement. Then let the Tea Party rule!

I know Randy Forbes pretty well. I like him a lot. Randy is, at his core, an evangelical Christian, so it should be expected to have him, from time to time, champion issues that emanate from his religious values. However, Randy Forbes has also been at the forefront of the national energy independence issue, having called for a, “Manhattan Project” level of investment to achieve national energy independence.

I am very confident that Congressman Forbes is capable of juggling more than one legislative ball and that he can speak eloquently on behalf of promoting the, “In God We Trust” motto, while providing exceptional amounts of work on behalf of domestic energy development and job creation.

I want to see Virginia Democrats strengthen our ties among our citizens of faith. I don’t want to see the Virginia Democrats become further isolated from citizens who have traditional values. We can serve as the champion of the working man and the defender of everyone’s civil liberties, without becoming the Party of political correctness worshiping, fringe elements and an anti-Christian political movement.

There is a great deal of political ground to be gained by working in concert with traditional-values voters. As always, we needn’t always agree on every issue to form constructive alliances for the common benefit of all of our citizens.

UPDATE: Rep. Forbes’ “In God We Trust” bill will come for a vote in the House, finally addressing one of the critically important issues of our time (right after taking care of emergency legislation to cut funding for National Public Radio)
